Robert Fletcher
Robert Fletcher (1922–2021) was hired by Director Robert Wise in March 1978 to design the costumes of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He replaced Star Trek veteran William Ware Theiss in the role. Together with makeup artist Fred Phillips, Fletcher updated the look of the Klingons, giving them their distinctive forehead ridges, and created ten new alien races, including the tutle-descent Rigellians and the mask-wearing Zaranites.
Fletcher’s most long-lived contributions to the franchise were the Starfleet uniforms he redesigned for The Motion Picture — and then redesigned again for The Wrath of Khan, whose director, Nicholas Meyer, felt the first movie uniforms were too bland. He also designed the costumes of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
